Europe in 1945 had been turned into a vast physical and moral wasteland. In the wreckage of defeated Germany the british, american and soviet forces came face to face with the true horrors of the system they had fought against. This time there was no negotation with the Germans as there had been in 1918 ; the leaders of Hitler's Reich were seized as war criminals and thrown into makeshift camps. "Interrogations" is the story of these prisoners as they and their captors came to terms with the reality of the bloodiest war in human history. The Allies had an opportunity unique in modern times to get their enemy to tell the story of war, terror and genocide as they had seen it. Most talked willingly - stunned, disorientated, bitter, fearful, they sat and calmly discussed the system they had so recently served and for which they were now called to account. The months before their trial were marked by sudden drama, grim confrontations, desperate efforts to deny responsibility or to confound the victors. Through "Interrogations" the reader confronts the reality of a savage dictatorship in its death throes. More than thirty interrogations are reproduced to capture the full flavour of the bizarre, psychologically charged response of men in a though prison regime who not long before had enjoyed all the privileges and esteem of high office. As the stories unfolded, many scarcely credible, the Allies built up the picture of the Third Reich they needed for the Nuremberg trials. This is the history of defeat : stark and disturbing, "Interrogations" lays bare the human weaknesses that made the Third Reich possible.

Now in its 5th edition, The Origins of the Second World War explores the reasons why the Second World War broke out in September 1939 and why a European conflict developed into a war that spanned the globe. This book argues that the global conflict was not just 'Hitler's War' but one that had its roots and origins in the decline of the old empires of Britain and France and the rise of ambitious new powers in Germany, Italy and Japan who wanted large empires of their own. Richard Overy covers the origins of the war from its background in the First World War to its expansion to embrace the Soviet Union, Japan and the United States by the end of 1941. Creating a comprehensive and analytical narrative while remaining a succinct overview of the subject, this book takes a thematic approach to the complex range of events that culminated in global warfare, discussing factors such as economic rivalry, rearmament and domestic politics and emphasising that any explanation of the outbreak of hostilities must be global in scope. This new edition includes more discussion of the role of empire and the imperial background to the war. Containing several new primary source documents alongside a glossary, a chronology of key events and a Who's Who of important figures, this book is an invaluable introduction for any student of this fascinating period in history. --

"In this second edition, Richard Overy presents the history of a civilization scrambling to save itself from looming disaster which seemed as brutal and tragic as it was unavoidable. By 1918 an entire generation across Europe felt themselves poised at a crossroads: a choice between chaos and decline on the one hand or a whole new world political and economic order on the other. In this atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, entire populations strove to choose order over chaos by turning to the political extremes of fascism and communism. When explanation was required, blame was laid at the doors of enfeebled democracy, communist subversion or Jewish plots." "Despite the yearning for peace, war appeared inescapable - not simply a reaction to Hitler's rise to power, war was also seen by some as a welcome way out of a bankrupt and crisis ridden age, a violent ending that would clear the stale air of the inter-war world."--Jacket.

(Dr. J.L.G. v. Oudheusden) © NBD Biblion
